ERNESTO RIVA’S CLASSIC VAPORINA GOES ELECTRIC!

erinnovation_1xlvkb

In a perfect marriage of classic design and cutting edge technology, Ernesto Riva unveiled the Vaporina Elettra – coupling one of the legendary yachtmaker’s most admired designs with advanced electric propulsion and battery technology from the 21st century. Fittingly, it made its debut on Lake Como at this year’s world-famous beauty contest for historic automobiles and motorcycles – the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Cantiere (Shipyard) Ernesto Riva has been designing and handcrafting some of the world’s most beautiful boats since 1771, guided by the philosophy of Ernesto Riva to “never build a boat that is the same as another”. As the lake’s Sereno Hotels puts it: ‘each piece that comes out of the yard is a functional work of art.’ The Vaporina Elletra is a fine example – a wooden boat lovingly handcrafted with exquisite detailing.

Each boat is a functional work of art
Daniele Riva, the 6th generation family member who currently heads the company, learned the techniques and secrets of wooden boat construction literally at the foot of masters as he grew up. He says the Vaporina: “is one of our most traditional models. With the new electric drive, we are prepared for the 21st century. The boat shows once again how elegant, uncompromisingly sustainable and safe maritime e-mobility can be in this day and age.”

The Vaporina design and lines graced some of the first motorboats on Lake Como in the 1930s. The long sleek craft (10m / 32ft) with driving position in the bow, passenger space in the rear covered by a glass rooftop were patterned after New York steam launches of the 19th century used to transport people from Long Island to Manhattan. Most of the Vaporinas on the lake today come from Ernesto Riva, whose shipyard is situated just off the lake in Laglio.

Two electric motors, Li-ion batteries: 200kW of power

Instead of steam (or gas or diesel) the 2019 Vaporina Elettra has two electric motors, each with a power output of 100 kW. The batteries and electronics system come from ecovolta. The Swiss company was chosen because weight and space are limited, even on a 10 metre boat. ecovolta’s lithium-ions have a high energy density of 480Wh per litre and on the Vaporina enable 180kWh of power and 5 hours of autonomous operation at a speed of 13 knots / 25kmh / 15mph.

Ecovolta also partnered on the Riva E-Commuter introduced last year and shown off at the 2018 Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge. The video below comes from the YouTube channel  ofYCS Yachting In Costa Smeralda and shows Daniele Riva at the helm for one of the E-Commuter’s first excursions.

How exciting that one of the most famous and respected boatbuilding families in history is now incorporating electric power into their designs. As Ernesto Riva said in a 2006 interview: “Something you have done properly will last forever.”

Despite its long history, the shipyard has entered modern times. The current Vaporina Elettra has two electric motors, each with a power output of 100 kW, a length of nearly 10 metres and room for 12 people on board. The lithium-ion batteries used in the Elettra provide a total capacity of 180 kWh and enable 5 hours of autonomous operation at a speed of 13 knots. Thanks to their energy density of 480 Wh per litre, the batteries offer a high capacity without taking up too much space.

Besides, the shipyard had already presented its e-Commuter, which is also fully electric, last year, also with the system by ecovolta.
For now, the electric yacht is a one-off and available for tourists to rent in Italy so that no price has been named.

The electric boat “Ernesto”, build in 2018 by Cantiere Ernesto Riva, is exhibited at the “Energy Storage Europe”, an international event organized in Dusseldorf (Germany) from March 12 to 14.
“Energy Storage Europe” exhibition will host the most important international players (ABB, Samsung, Siemens, Hitachi etc.) to present their last innovation in the electricity sector and new solutions for the development of global electric mobility.

Ernesto is recognized as an Italian excellence; the first high-performance, totally electric and sustainable runaboat, entirely built in precious woods from the Ernesto Riva Shipyard, the historic shipyard based in Laglio (Comolake). In 2018 Ernesto won numerous awards, including the “best eco-boat of the year” received from UIM in Monte Carlo.
During the event in Dusseldorf a new partnership signed by ER INNOVATION (company of the “Cantiere Ernesto Riva” group) and the Swiss ECOVOLTA groupwill be announced.

ER INNOVATION – The company is dedicated to the study and implementation of innovative projects for the development of electric mobility in the nautical sector. The research developed in more than 2 years with the “project Ernesto”, has allowed the Company to  accumulate a unique experience in nautical E-Mobility. ER Innovation, thanks also to the cooperation signed now with the ECOVOLTA group, stands as one of the top Italian player for the supply of innovative solutions and packages for electric boats.

ECOVOLTA – Swiss Group is an international leader in the production of battery packs and technological solutions for electric mobility in all sectors. With Ecovolta technology, e-mobility providers can access solutions with the highest safety standards for small and medium-sized vehicles.  Ecovolta will present a new battery packs in Dusseldorf with an innovative safety system.

ELECTRIC ENGINE OF CANTIERE ERNESTO RIVA SHIPYARD AWARDED AT MONTECARLO

erinnovation_1xlvkb
The interest for “Ernesto” started directly from the Monegasque sovereign family, strongly oriented towards making Montecarlo more and more avant-garde in sustainable mobility. In the presence of Prince Albert, who was able to personally experience comfort and open space of the prototype of the Cantiere Ernesto Riva shipyard with a short navigation in front of the Yacht Club of Monaco, Daniele Riva received from the president of UIM, dr. Raffaele Chiulli, the UIM Special Award for Sustainable Development, a prize for its ability to combine electrical modernity with tradition. Together with Daniele Riva, the arch. Germán Mani Frers.

The recognition and appreciation at the Cantiere Ernesto Riva yard was also expressed in the crowded Press Conference and the Gala on Saturday 17 March. The dr. Chiulli and the dr. Marco Casiraghi, along with Daniele Riva and Mani Frers, wanted to present what will be the culmination of the Principality’s green policy: the Solar and Electric Boat Challenge to be held in mid-July in the waters of Monaco. Opportunity for hundreds of university students (including Italian students) to experiment their research in the field of sustainable mobility, the Challenge will have “Ernesto” among the guests to demonstrate how the electric can enter both in everyday life and in the elite of boating.

The E-commuter “Ernesto”, exhibited outside the Sporting Montecarlo, after the support of Italian institutions such as the Lombardy Region and CNA, has now found international credit, demonstrating the enormous potential of the intuition and work of Daniele Riva who comments: “I am very happy that the centenary tradition of my father’s yard has been recognized, in such an important context, as one of the main ways to develop innovation and the future of boating”.
Here the video of Ernesto at the Yacht Club of Monaco in the presence of Prince Albert.
